STARGATE SG-1 - Goa'uld Crystals Drawer
Well, not really from original production molds, but more like from original props, where i added some parts to recreate the whole set dec piece.
This project goes back to my beginnings as a prop collector, along with the dhd crystal i had bought from legends in fedcon convention, i had bought a large goa’uld crystal, since then i always wanted to build an entire drawer.
It’s only recently i finally gathered all the part needed to this build :
- Goa’uld crystal bought from Legends Memorabilia at Fedcon 2014
- Crystal board, bought on ebay, initially coming from Legends Memorabilia
- Gold cover, bought from Stargate Prop Shop, initially coming from Propstore
- Little panel, bought from Stargate Prop Shop, initially coming from Legends Memorabilia
This drawer appears in the the season 5, episode 17 “Failsafe”
Well experimented thanks to the dhd crystals run, i was pretty confident making those crystals.
At the time i made the dhd crystals i had made a mold of the larger one, not having the requiring equipment to cast clear material, i had just made a regular opaque casting i was keeping as master for the day i’ll start this project.
So i cleaned that cast to get it pristine.
Mold made with shore 15 silicone et casing done with lasercutted plexiglass.
I used smooth cast 326 resin with vacuum chamber to make the 13 crystals needed.
I didn’t had a pressure chamber, so there was really few bubbles sometimes, but nothing bad, degassing resin and pouring meticulously gave me excellent results.
Not fully satisfied with the final result, i decided to polish the crystals : wetsanding with finer grit, et applying clear varnish.
First pic shows sanded crystal, then varnished
The front panel, which come from the episode previously quoted, this one had been recycled for another episode from season 9, production glued it to a bigger panel, so i inglued those two.
I created the panel thickness out of lasercutted wood sheet, glued and screwed together.
Drawer also has a panel at the back, slightly smaller than the front one, so i made a mold from the front panel, cut a wood panel that i inserted into the mold while pouring resin.
Weight and clamps insured pressure for the resin to stick to the wood.
The “drawer” itself is pretty simple, woods and screw.
Unfortunatly the wood i bought was a bit warped, and as i was doing that on a sunday, didn’t worth the hassle to stop the project as i had the whole day free to work on that.
So i bend it back to the best i could, and applied bondo to get flat surface, was the most effective way on a sunday (where all shops are closed).
Drawers sides had same texture than frontpanel, so i poured resin into the frontpanel mold, before the resin was cure and hard, i demolded while it was still soft, allowed me to apply it onto the wood like vynil and cut easily with an x-acto knife.
In order to keep the crystal straight into the panel, i glued foam on the back.
I applied pressure with the original crystal into the foam, so the mark would give me patterns to cut holes.
Starting to looks like something ! :D
Still in the process to keep crystals straight, i put a clear support inside the box, made it clear so it will let the light goes trought.
For the light system, i did very simple, i bought a RGB led strip, glued aluminium foil and installed the led.
Final weathering was drybrushing gold on the side panels.
And here we are :D
Thrilled to see this 4 years project coming to an end <3
