STARGATE SG-1 - DHD Crystals v1

My very first project !! It goes back to october 2014 ( i am writing this in March 2018).

At the time, i had bought an original DHD crystal from Legends Memorabilia during the fedcon convention in May 2014.

So it’s in october of the same year i tried to make replicas from this crystal. As it was small i thought it was a good way to start propsmaking, but i didn’t knew that clear casting were so though to make without required equiments, it almost ended my way to propsmaking.

The crystal had few defects, so i made one mold, then one cast i remastered, then a new mold, then 10 casts, then a bigger mold for those last 10.

I used epoxy clear resin tinted with painting stained glass.
Can be demolded after 24h, takes 48h (sometimes more) to fully cure.

Results were still relevant compare to the original which were full of bubbles :-p

One of the biggest problem i got on this project, it’s due to the cylinder shape of the mold, bubbles appears on the surface of the mold causing visible holes on the cast once demolded. I was filling those holes with superglue, then wetsanding until flat (don’t remember where i had saw that technique).
I was wasting a lot of time, that project was not profitable at all.

I’d have need a vaccum chamber.

I had used all the resin i had bought for that projects then i stop making those because it was too much hassle.

That was the final results :

One year later i finally bought a vaccum chamber, which considerably changed my life !
